Request:

Another cause of increased safety incidents came from within our office locations, primarily related to poor office housekeeping on the part of employees. Fire hazards in the break room, cords draped across the conference room, and spilled water creating slip, trip and fall hazards led our safety manager to request housekeeping training for the organization as part of the project year 2022 training curriculum.

I was given a text-heavy PowerPoint with a lot of images showing what messy and clean workspaces would look like and was asked to turn it into an interactive eLearning course.

Solution:

With a title like “Housekeeping”, employees are going to tune out, especially if the content is not engaging. The original PowerPoint I was given was written more to drive “awareness” that poor housekeeping in the office creates potentially dangerous situations for employees. However, I knew the goal of this training wasn’t just to make employees more aware, but to actually drive behavior change. I developed an interactive course that would enable employees to explore various office areas and identify hazards. Information pops up on the screen to reinforce why those hazards are potentially dangerous and how to correct them.
